Sheldon Raymore is a New York City fashion designer whose work has graced the red carpet at the GRAMMYS. He’s the head designer for HEYOKA clothing brand www.heyokanyc.com and has spent most of his adult life working with Italian fashion houses Roberto Cavalli and Angelo Galasso. He communicates traditional Native American stories transformed from experiences of oppression that let audiences observe contemporary life through a Native lens.
I chose the name "Heyoka" because there are several non-natives using this word in fashion, music, and art. It's being appropriated and reappropriated by them without regard or respect for Lakota life ways. I had to purchase the trademark rights to use it and reclaim an ownership to address these issues. Thank you for your interest in HEYOKA garments. HEYOKA is a respected manufacturer of Dresses, Ponchos, Scarves, Shirts, Sweaters, Sweatshirts, and Vests, as well as stage costumes on turtle island. We manufacturer and inventory products that are Native American made and not “Native Inspired."
Since our founding 8 years ago, we have been privately owned and operated, and have excelled by adhering to the old-world tradition of providing superior quality, which by adopting to the changing times. Each HEYOKA garment is hand-sewn with pride in our studio in NYC, and combines outstanding craftsmanship with meticulous detailing.
Don't be fooled by cheap, imported, poorly-constructed fashion and costume look-alikes, which have copied our styles with inferior materials. Our products are crisp, clean and fresh, without the odor and discoloration often observed with imports. Since our founding, all HEYOKA products have been built with the quality and durability required by dances and other professional stage and screen performers.
